Each level is one 2.5D room in the forest biome with both spirits running real physics. There is no reliable level count: the developer has said 30 at release, 40 in total, and eventually 50, and has since promised more batches on top. The difficulty curve is uneven, and a small number of level bugs (level 14 crystal fixed, level 11 geometry bug open) have known status.

What Counts as a Level

Each level is one room: enter, solve, exit.

  • Every level is set in the forest biome. Snow and desert biome rooms have been announced as separate DLC packs of thirty levels each and are not yet in the game; both are listed with the rest of the promised updates on the Update Roadmap page.
  • All movement, object interaction and enemy behaviour is simulated through real physics rather than scripted animation.
  • Both spirits running into each other is a normal mechanic, not a bug — one body shoves the other — and the camera zooms in and out on its own as the pair spread apart.
  • The room is cleared only when both spirits reach their own character-specific gate.

That camera zoom-out is the cue your level is on the wider side: the smaller the camera frame, the narrower the puzzle and the more a single room reads like a vertical tower.

How Many Levels Are in the Game

There is no settled answer, because the developer's public figures contradict each other. Everything he has actually said:

  • 30 levels at release — the plan the game shipped to on 16 October 2026, which works out to roughly three to four hours of play.
  • "40 in total" — stated on 17 October, adding that the finished game could end up higher than that.
  • "Eventually 50" — from the same discussion, an earlier promise that outruns the 40 figure.
  • "20 more new levels soon", then "22 more new levels" — volunteered in unrelated Steam threads days later, which puts the count above every figure above.

What is safe to say: the room count rises with each patch, no single number he has given is authoritative, and a count taken from a launch-week guide or video will be wrong. Everything he has promised but not shipped is on the Update Roadmap page, and room-by-room crystal routes are on Collect All Crystals.

Difficulty Curve

Difficulty is uneven rather than a steady curve. Players describe the opening level as having roughly the right amount of figuring-out, then later rooms as occasionally extremely hard, and several reviews are about a single level that took hours or had to be abandoned.

  • Mushroom bounce chains and ball-throw routes show up across multiple levels as recurring set pieces.
  • Difficulty spikes tend to land on rooms that combine several mechanics — a tilt-platform plus a pushable plus a mutant plant — at once.
  • A level that you cannot clear after several attempts is not necessarily a bug. Patch updates also tend to land in this region.

If you are stuck on a single room, check the Collect All Crystals page for the level 11 crystal route specifically, and the How to Get Past Enemies page for the plant-specific patterns.

Known Level Bugs

Level 14 crystal
PatchedLevel 14 shipped with one crystal that could not be collected at all. This has been fixed in a follow-up patch.
VSYNC desync
PatchedThe same update also fixed lag between the two players caused by VSYNC settings — see the Online Co-op Lag Fix page.
Level 11 purple platform
OpenLevel 11 has a purple platform sitting slightly too high for the ball to reach the mushroom beneath it, which left that route effectively unreachable. This is a known geometry bug the developer has not shipped a fix for yet.

FAQ

What is this site?

It is an unofficial, English-language guide hub for Fire and Water: Spirits of the Forest on Steam. It collects the mechanics, puzzle rules, crystal routes, enemy patterns, level structure, and co-op setup for the game in one place, so you can find the answer for the room you are stuck in without reading a whole forum thread.
